Hacked Instagram Account: How to Get It Back Fast
First 30 minutes: the emergency checklist
When an account is hijacked, the attacker's first moves are predictable: change the email, change the phone number, enable their own two-factor authentication, and lock you out completely. Your speed matters more than anything else. Immediately: check your email for a “security@mail.instagram.com” message — Instagram sends a revert link when contact details change, and it works even after the attacker's changes. If you can still log in on any device, change the password there and log out all other sessions.
Use Instagram's hacked-account flow
Go to instagram.com/hacked (or tap “Get help logging in” in the app). Select “My account was hacked” and follow the identity flow:
- Enter the username, plus any email or phone ever linked to the account — old ones help.
- Request the video selfie verification if the account has photos of you. This defeats most takeovers because the attacker can't pass it.
- For business accounts without face photos, prepare ownership evidence: original media files, business documents, the email used at signup.
What if the hacker is impersonating or scamming?
Hijacked accounts are frequently used to run crypto scams on your followers. Warn your audience from another channel immediately, and have friends report the account for impersonation — these reports raise the case's priority. Screenshot everything: scam messages, the changed profile, ransom demands. This documentation matters if the case needs escalation.
After recovery: lock it down
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, not SMS.
- Check Settings → Security → Apps and websites and remove everything you don't recognize.
- Verify the email and phone on file are yours, and that no unknown backup codes exist.
- Change the password of the email account itself — it's usually the original point of entry.
If the standard flow fails — video selfie rejected, ownership disputed, or the attacker keeps re-verifying — the case needs manual escalation through Meta's support channels, which is exactly the work our recovery team handles daily. Free analysis, payment only after the account is back.
