What Is a Shadow Ban? How to Detect and Remove It

A shadow ban is a hidden restriction: the platform doesn't notify you, your account looks normal, but your content stops being shown to non-followers. Posts disappear from hashtag pages, Reels stop reaching the Explore feed, and your engagement drops off a cliff — often 50–90% overnight.

• Hashtag test: post with a niche hashtag, then check that hashtag from an account that doesn't follow you. If your post never appears, that's a red flag.
• Reach breakdown: in your insights, look at the share of views from non-followers. A sudden collapse to near zero suggests restricted distribution.
• Account status: Instagram now shows warnings under Settings → Account Status. Check it first — many restrictions are listed there.

Shadow bans are usually triggered by: repetitive engagement patterns that look automated (bots, engagement pods, mass follow/unfollow), banned or spammy hashtags, reposting flagged content, repeated minor guideline violations, or third-party apps connected to your account that violate the terms of service.

• Disconnect all unauthorized third-party apps and bots.
• Remove recent posts that used banned hashtags.

• Return with original, guideline-safe content and organic engagement.
