Instagram “Try again later”: why actions get blocked and how to fix it

·3 min read·

Short answer

The “Try again later” or action-blocked message means Instagram has limited something you were doing — liking, following, commenting or messaging — because it looked automated or inauthentic. Stop the action, disconnect third-party apps that have access, check login activity and change your password if anything looks unfamiliar. Most limits are temporary. If it repeats, open Account Status to see which features are restricted and request a review where Instagram offers one.

Why Instagram blocks actions

  • Many follows, likes or comments in a short time.
  • Growth tools, auto-likers or schedulers with access to the account.
  • Logins from many devices or networks at once — sometimes because someone else is using the account.
  • Copy-pasted comments or messages sent to many people.

Instagram says that when inauthentic activity is detected you may see the “Try again later” message.

What to do now

  1. Stop the action that is blocked; repeating it keeps the limit going.
  2. Remove third-party apps and websites with access to the account.
  3. Check login activity, log out of unknown sessions and change the password.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication.
  5. Update the app and use one device and network for a while.

Check Account Status

Account Status lists features you can’t use, removed content and whether your posts can be recommended. If a restriction is listed there, you can usually disagree and request a review. How each section works is in Account Status explained.

When it is more than a block

If posts, comments or messages appear that you didn’t write, treat it as a compromised account — see hacked Instagram. If the block keeps returning or your reach has fallen as well, the account may have a longer restriction history; diagnosing that is our shadow ban removal work.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Instagram action block last?

Most are temporary and lift once the activity stops; repeated blocks can last longer. Account Status shows features that are restricted.

Will deleting and reinstalling the app help?

Only if an old version is the problem. The limit is on the account, not the phone.

Is an action block the same as a shadow ban?

No. A block stops you doing something; a shadow ban limits who sees your content. They can have the same cause.

Can I appeal an action block?

If the restriction is listed in Account Status or the message offers to tell Instagram it was a mistake, use that option.

Disconnect every app that acts on your behalf before anything else. Most repeat blocks come back because the tool that caused them is still connected.
