Short answer
Instagram asks for a video selfie to confirm that a real person — the person in the account’s photos — is behind the account: during login recovery, after activity that looked automated, or when someone changes their age. Record it in good light, with your face uncovered, following the head-turn prompts, on the latest app version. Instagram has said the video is never shown on the account and is deleted within 30 days. Repeated failures usually mean the account has no clear photos of you, or ownership is disputed — and then a different route is needed.
Why Instagram asks for a video selfie
- Recovery — you can’t log in and Instagram needs to confirm it is you before resetting access.
- Suspected automation — the “confirm you’re a real person” check after unusual activity.
- Age changes — moving an account from under 18 to adult.
The video is compared with photos of you on the account, which is why an attacker cannot pass it.
How to record a selfie that passes
- Update the Instagram app and use your own phone, not an emulator or borrowed device.
- Face a window or a bright lamp; avoid backlight.
- Remove sunglasses, hats and masks; keep your whole face in the frame.
- Turn your head slowly in each direction the app asks for.
- Use a stable connection so the upload does not break.
Waiting for the result
Reviews often take a day or two, sometimes longer. Submitting again and again while one is pending does not help and can slow things down. If the app keeps looping on “confirm you’re a real person”, close it, wait a day, and try again on the same device and network.
When it keeps failing
- No clear photos of you on the account — brand accounts, meme pages, art accounts.
- The photos were changed by someone who hacked the account.
- Ownership is disputed or the details you give don’t match the record.
These cases need other ownership evidence and, often, escalation — the work behind our Instagram account recovery. If you also lost the email and phone, start with recovering without email or phone.
Privacy and safety
Instagram has said video selfies are never visible on Instagram and are deleted within 30 days. Record them only inside the official app. Anyone who asks you to send them a selfie video “for verification” over DM or WhatsApp is not Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone else do the video selfie for me?
No. It has to be the person in the account’s photos, on their own device. We never do it on a client’s behalf, and neither should anyone else.
How long does the video selfie review take?
Often a day or two, sometimes longer. Avoid resubmitting while a review is pending.
What happens to my video selfie?
Instagram has said it is never visible on the account and is deleted within 30 days.
There are no photos of me on the account. What now?
The video selfie cannot match anything, so other proof of ownership is needed — original files, business documents, the signup email.
