Deleted Instagram account: can it be recovered?

·3 min read·

Short answer

If you requested deletion yourself, Instagram keeps the account for a period — 30 days in most regions — and you cancel the request simply by logging back in before that date. After it, the account and its content are gone for good. A deactivated account comes back as soon as you log in. If Instagram disabled it, that is not a deletion: you need the appeal. If a hacker requested the deletion, recover access first, then log in within the window.

Deleted, deactivated or disabled?

  • Deactivated: you hid the profile temporarily. Logging in brings it back.
  • Deletion requested: the account is hidden and scheduled for permanent deletion. You can cancel during the window.
  • Permanently deleted: the window has passed. Instagram says the information cannot be retrieved.
  • Disabled or suspended by Instagram: the notice offers an appeal — see what to do when Instagram disables your account.

How to cancel a deletion

  1. Log in with the username and password before the deletion date shown when the request was made.
  2. Instagram asks whether you want to keep the account — confirm it.
  3. Check that your posts and followers are visible again; it can take a little while.

The length of the window can vary by region, so go by the date Instagram showed you rather than a number you read online.

If someone else deleted it

An attacker who takes over an account sometimes requests deletion. Recover access first — the revert link in Instagram’s security email, instagram.com/hacked, or the video selfie — then log in to cancel before the date. Our hacked Instagram guide covers the first steps; time matters more than anything here.

After permanent deletion

Once the window has passed, there is no restore — not through support, and not through anyone selling “recovery”. You can register a new account, and you may be able to take the same username again if nobody else has claimed it. If you downloaded your information before deleting, that copy is all that remains of the content.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to undo an Instagram deletion?

Usually 30 days from the request, but it can vary by region. The date is shown when you request the deletion.

Can Instagram support restore a permanently deleted account?

No. Instagram says that after the deletion period the account and its information can’t be retrieved.

Can I get my old username back?

After permanent deletion, the username can be used again for a new account as long as nobody else has taken it.

My account says it was disabled, not deleted. Is it gone?

No. A disabled account is under enforcement and can be appealed within the period on the notice.

If you are inside the deletion window, log in now. It is the only step that cancels the deletion, and it takes seconds.
