Deleted Google Account: how to recover it — and when it’s too late

·3 min read·

Short answer

You can recover a recently deleted Google Account; Google doesn’t publish a fixed period and says that after a while it may no longer be possible, so start straight away. Go to Google’s account recovery page, enter the deleted Gmail address and answer the questions that confirm it’s yours — ideally on a device and network you have used before. If it works, set a password you haven’t used for that account before. If it fails, Google suggests creating a new account. Work or school accounts are different: an administrator can restore a deleted user within 20 days.

What can be recovered

  • A personal account deleted recently — Google gives no exact number of days.
  • An account deleted a while ago may not be recoverable at all.
  • Work or school accounts follow a separate 20-day rule for administrators (see below).

Recover it step by step

  1. Open Google’s account recovery page and enter the deleted email address.
  2. Answer the questions to confirm the account is yours: previous passwords, recovery phone or email, and when you created it.
  3. Use a device and location you normally sign in from; Google uses these signals.
  4. When asked, create a new password you haven’t used for this account.

If recovery fails

  • Google suggests creating a replacement Google Account.
  • Update the services that used the old address (bank, social media, app stores) — many offer their own recovery.
  • If the account was taken over and then deleted, see hacked Google account and recovery without a phone.

Work or school (Workspace) accounts

If your organisation deleted the account, only its administrator can restore it — Google allows up to 20 days after deletion, after which the data is gone. Ask your IT team, not Google’s consumer support.

Don’t lose an account to inactivity

  • Google may delete accounts that are not used for 2 years. Signing in, sending an email or using YouTube while signed in counts as activity.
  • Keep the recovery email and phone current — Google says changes to recovery info can take up to 7 days to take effect.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to recover a deleted Google account?

Google doesn’t publish a fixed period. Only recently deleted accounts can be recovered, so start immediately.

Can I keep my old password after recovery?

No. Google asks you to create a new password that you haven’t used for this account before.

My school deleted my account — can I get it back?

Only the administrator can restore it, within 20 days of deletion.

Does Google delete inactive accounts?

Yes. Google may delete accounts that haven’t been used for 2 years.
