Short answer
Log in first: if X asks you to confirm a phone number or email address, completing that step often restores the account. A locked or limited account is usually temporary; a suspension needs an appeal. Log in to the suspended account, open X’s appeal form in a new tab, and explain specifically why the decision is wrong. If X upholds a suspension, it tells you which policy was violated. Do not create a new account to get around it — that is ban evasion.
Locked, limited or suspended?
- Locked — X noticed unusual activity and wants you to confirm a phone number or email, or pass a challenge.
- Limited — some features are restricted for a period, for example you can read but not post.
- Suspended — the account is suspended for breaking X’s rules; a banner says so when you log in. Suspensions can be temporary or permanent.
Try the self-help steps first
When you log in, follow any prompt to provide a phone number or confirm your email. Many locks and some suspensions lift as soon as these steps are completed. Make sure the phone number can receive SMS and the email inbox is one you can open.
How to file an appeal
- Log in to the suspended account.
- In a new browser tab, open X’s appeal form for locked or suspended accounts.
- Name the rule you think was applied and explain, concretely, why your account did not break it — or what context the review missed.
- Keep it short and factual, and submit once. Replies arrive by email.
Common reasons for suspension
- Spam and platform manipulation — automation, bulk following, repetitive replies.
- Impersonation — including parody or fan accounts that are not clearly labelled.
- Ban evasion — operating an account to get around an earlier suspension.
- Abusive behaviour or hateful conduct.
- A hacked account used for spam or scams.
If you were hacked or impersonated
If someone took over your X account, use X’s help form for hacked accounts and secure the email behind it. If a different account is pretending to be you, report it as impersonation; persistent fake accounts and leaked private information are what our X account removal service handles. For takeovers across platforms, see hacked account recovery.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an X appeal take?
It varies from days to several weeks. X replies by email to the address on the account.
Can a permanently suspended X account come back?
Yes, if the suspension was a mistake — that is what the appeal is for. If X finds the suspension valid, it explains which policy was violated.
Why was my account suspended when I did nothing wrong?
Automated spam detection catches legitimate accounts too, especially after bursts of activity, new devices or third-party tools. Those cases are worth appealing.
Can I create a new account while I appeal?
No. Operating another account to get around a suspension counts as ban evasion and can make the suspension permanent.
