Strikes, suspensions and termination — know the difference
YouTube's enforcement ladder: a warning (one-time, no penalty), then Community Guidelines strikes (three strikes in 90 days = termination), and separately, immediate termination for severe violations, repeated copyright strikes, or “channel dedicated to policy violation” findings. Terminated channels lose everything visible — videos, subscribers, playlists — but the data isn't deleted immediately, which is why appeals can restore a channel fully intact.
You get one form — use it well
The channel appeal happens through YouTube's “Appeal channel termination” form. Practical rules:
- Submit from the Google account that owns the channel — appeals from other accounts go nowhere.
- In the explanation field, be specific: which policy was cited, why you believe the decision was wrong, and what changed. Generic “please restore my channel” texts fail.
- You typically get one substantive appeal. Rushed, angry or empty submissions burn it.
Copyright terminations are different
If termination came from three copyright strikes, the appeal path runs through the strikes themselves: counter-notifications (if you had rights or fair-use grounds) or retraction requests to the claimants. A successful retraction removes the strike and can reverse the termination. This route is procedural and time-sensitive — counter-notices have legal weight, so accuracy matters.
Timelines and escalation
Appeal responses typically arrive within 7–30 days by email. No reply after a month, or a template rejection on a strong case, doesn't have to be the end: creator support channels and properly documented escalations can get a genuine human review.
