Facebook account locked: how to unlock it safely

·3 min read·

Short answer

Facebook locks accounts when it sees unusual activity, to protect them. You’ll get an email or see a message at login. Log in again — or follow the link in Facebook’s email — and Facebook takes you through the unlock steps, usually confirming your identity with a code. If codes don’t arrive, wait a day before requesting more and check the phone number, email and spam folder. If you think someone hacked you, use facebook.com/hacked from a device you’ve used before. A suspension is different: it needs an appeal within the deadline on the notice.

Why Facebook locks accounts

  • Logins from an unusual place or device.
  • Activity that looks automated or like a takeover — mass messages, sudden changes.
  • Signs that your password may have been exposed.

The lock protects the account while Facebook checks it is really you. It is not a judgement that you broke the rules.

How to unlock

  1. Log in on a device you normally use, or open the link in Facebook’s email about the lock.
  2. Follow the steps: confirm a code sent to your phone or email, or other identity checks.
  3. Once in, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.
  4. Check where you’re logged in and remove sessions you don’t recognise.

When the code doesn’t arrive

  • If you have requested several codes, wait a day before trying again.
  • Make sure the code is going to the phone number or email currently on the account.
  • Check spam and your phone’s blocked or filtered messages.
  • A weak signal or an old phone can stop texts — restart the phone; ask your carrier whether your plan blocks some message types.
  • If you can’t log in at all, use Facebook’s account recovery for when you can’t log in.

Locked, suspended or disabled?

  • Locked: a security check you complete yourself.
  • Suspended or disabled: Facebook decided the account broke its rules. The notice gives an appeal — within 180 days in many regions — and if it’s missed or rejected, the account is permanently disabled. See disabled Facebook account.
  • “Profile locked” on someone else’s profile is just a privacy setting they chose.

If the lock follows a hack

If you didn’t make the changes Facebook flagged, treat it as a takeover: go to facebook.com/hacked from a familiar device, secure the email behind the account and check whether any Pages or ad accounts were touched. When the unlock loops or the attacker changed your details, our Facebook account recovery service works it through Meta’s official channels.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Facebook lock last?

Until you complete the unlock steps. There is usually no waiting period, except when you have requested too many codes.

Facebook wants an ID to unlock my account. Is that normal?

Facebook can ask for identity confirmation. Only upload it inside Facebook’s own flow — never through a link someone sent you.

Can I appeal a lock?

There is nothing to appeal — a lock is a security check. Appeals are for suspended or disabled accounts.

My account keeps getting locked. Why?

Repeated locks usually mean something still looks risky: an exposed password, an unknown session or a connected app. Change the password, enable 2FA and review sessions.

Never use an “unlock service” that asks for your password or codes. The unlock steps are yours to complete, inside Facebook.
