Google account disabled: how to appeal and get Gmail and YouTube back

·3 min read·

Short answer

When Google disables an account you can’t sign in to Gmail, YouTube, Drive or “Sign in with Google”. If it’s yours, sign in on a browser, choose Start appeal and follow the steps. For some policy violations Google reviews up to two appeals: if the first is rejected, a second with more information is re-evaluated by a reviewer, and later appeals are closed. If the appeal fails, the account stays unavailable and can be deleted. EU users may have further options under the Digital Services Act.

What a disabled account affects

  • Gmail, Drive, Photos and Calendar.
  • YouTube channels owned by the account.
  • Purchases and subscriptions on Google Play.
  • Every site and app you log in to with “Sign in with Google”.

Google may tell you by email or text message to a recovery address or number.

How to appeal

  1. Sign in to the disabled account in a browser.
  2. Select Start appeal and follow the instructions.
  3. Explain specifically why the decision is wrong — what the account is used for, and any compromise or misunderstanding — and add what Google asks for.
  4. If the first appeal is rejected, send a second one only with genuinely new information.

Hacked, then disabled

Accounts are sometimes disabled after an attacker uses them for spam or fraud. Say so in the appeal, with the date you lost control and what you changed afterwards. First steps for a takeover are in our hacked Google account guide.

If you are in the EU

Google notes that people in the EU may have additional resolution options. Under the Digital Services Act that includes a statement of reasons and, after the internal appeal, a certified out-of-court dispute body — see your appeal rights under the DSA.

Protect what depends on it

Change “Sign in with Google” logins on other services to email-and-password where you can, and tell your bank and work contacts if Gmail was your main address. When the account carries a YouTube channel or a business, our YouTube channel recovery service prepares the appeal through Google’s official channels.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I appeal a disabled Google account?

For some policy violations Google reviews up to two appeals. After the second, further appeals are closed.

Will Google delete my disabled account?

If the appeal isn’t approved and no further action is taken, Google says the account is permanently disabled and considered for deletion.

Can I create a new Google account?

You can, but it won’t restore your email, files or channel, and creating accounts to get around a disable can breach Google’s policies.

My YouTube channel went down with the account. Do I appeal both?

Start with the Google account. The channel comes back with it if the account is restored, unless the channel has its own separate enforcement.

Write the first appeal as if it were the only one. With a two-appeal limit, a vague first attempt wastes half your chances.
