Netflix account hacked or used without permission: how to take it back

·3 min read·

Short answer

If someone is using your Netflix account without permission, change your password to one you don’t use anywhere else, then go to Manage access and devices and sign out the devices you don’t recognise. Signing out of all devices also signs out your own, so you’ll log in again on each. Got an email about a new sign-in? Check every profile for email addresses you don’t recognise and remove them — Netflix says anyone using them is signed out within 24 hours. If you can’t reset the password, or the activity continues, contact Netflix. Unknown charges have their own help page.

Signs someone else is in

  • “Continue watching” titles or profiles you don’t know.
  • An email about a new sign-in you didn’t make.
  • Too many screens in use, or charges you don’t recognise.

Take it back

  1. Change your Netflix password — unique, at least 8 characters, hard to guess.
  2. Open Manage access and devices and sign out devices you don’t recognise.
  3. Check each profile for email addresses you don’t know and remove them.
  4. Secure the email account linked to Netflix too: 15-minute security checklist.

If you can’t sign in

Try the password reset first. If you can’t reset it, or you still see suspicious activity after the steps above, Netflix asks you to contact it. If someone used your payment details to open an account, contact Netflix right away and tell your bank.

Charges you don’t recognise

Netflix has a separate page for unrecognised or unauthorised charges. Compare the charge with your account’s billing details; if it isn’t yours, follow that page and contact your card issuer.

Why streaming accounts get taken

Most takeovers use a password leaked from another site, or a fake “payment failed” email. Use a unique password and don’t log in through links in messages: how to report phishing. Our hacked account recovery service works only through official channels.

Frequently asked questions

How do I kick someone off my Netflix account?

Change your password and sign out their device in Manage access and devices — or sign out of all devices and log back in on yours.

I got a Netflix new sign-in email I don’t recognise — what now?

Check every profile for email addresses you don’t know and remove them; Netflix says anyone using them is signed out within 24 hours. Then change your password.

Does signing out of all devices log me out too?

Yes. Every device is signed out, so you’ll need to sign in again on the ones you use.

When should I contact Netflix?

If you can’t reset your password, or suspicious activity continues after you’ve changed it and signed out devices.

Treat unexpected emails or texts that ask for your Netflix password or payment details as phishing. Go to netflix.com yourself instead of using the link.
