Short answer
Steam’s stolen-account help sets a clear order. First, run virus and spyware scans — keyloggers and malware can steal your Steam account name and password. Second, secure the email linked to the account; Steam says accounts are commonly taken after that email is compromised. Only then reset your Steam password. If you can’t sign in at all, use Steam Support’s “Help, I can’t sign in” wizard and choose the stolen-account option. Afterwards, protect the account with the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. Steam Support representatives will never ask for your password.
Step 1: clean the computer
Run virus and spyware scanners before anything else. Steam warns that viruses, keyloggers and spyware can capture your account name and password — resetting from an infected machine can lose the account again.
Step 2: secure your email
- Change the password of the email address linked to Steam and turn on its two-factor authentication: two-factor on every app.
- Steam notes that a compromised email lets the attacker interfere with recovery and support.
Step 3: reset the Steam password
- With the computer and email secure, reset your Steam password from Steam Support.
- If you can’t sign in, open “Help, I can’t sign in” and choose the option for a stolen account.
- Submit one complete request and keep it to Steam’s own site.
Lock it down
- Use the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the Steam Mobile App — it lets you sign in with a QR code and confirm actions with one tap on your phone.
- Lost or deleted the authenticator? Steam Support has a dedicated page for that.
- Check which devices are signed in, and use a unique password: who else is logged in?
Fake “Steam Support” and trade scams
Steam Support representatives never ask for your password. Messages claiming your account is about to be banned, or asking you to “verify” on another site, are phishing — see how to report phishing and recovery scams. Related: Discord hacked.
